Abstract

The mermaid archetype has been documented across the globe throughout history. The influence of mermaid mythology covers a broad spectrum, from goddesses to local folktales. The representation of merfolk includes depictions of both benevolence and wrath. From helpful sea creatures to vengeful lovers, these historical folktales set a foundation for the modern folklore of the mermaid being a sexualized symbol of femininity. The symbolism of the mermaid has inspired art, superstitious beliefs, and celebrations all over the world.
